The wafting smell of rancid and stale cigarette smoke that welcomed me when I arrived set the tone for the experience I had in Guangzhou; Confusing, heady, slow and cold. The airport is freezing, I don't think they have heating or they just forgot where the switch is. The staff really don't speak English so be prepared for total lapses in communication. You won't be able to access many of the basic amenities like WiFi. I couldn't use it because I didn't have a local number and had to burn through my data. The airport runs very slow, all the services, even simple things, will take a long time. They were also a bit too eager to do multiple luggage checks, slowing everything down even more. Even for layovers, they make you go through immigration. Seems like they have a real hankering for your papers.
