Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) Abuse Report

We are a family of 7 Sri Lankans (me, my husband, my father and mother, my husband's sister, my sister and her husband) who came to India on 27th December 2024 for a 11 day visit as tourists to visit Shimla, Manali and Delhi. Our return flight to Colombo was on 6th January 2025 and we had to face a nightmarish organized scam at the airport. Our flight ticket booking consisted of 3 single ticket bookings and one ticket booking for the remaining 4 people. At the check-in counter, 3 people who had single bookings got their boarding passes and we felt the process was deliberately slowed. Then at the check-in of the remaining 4 people, we gave our checked luggage (which were tightly wrapped in plastic wrap) and carry-on luggage. The staff told us that our checked luggage are of the right weight and carry-on luggage needed to be rearranged. So we took our bags and rearranged it and removed some of our bags to fit the expected carry on weight/size. Then when our carry-on luggage matched the weight/size limitation, the staff told us that our checked in bags exceeded the weight limit by 2kg. When I questioned that they earlier confirmed that they were ok, they accused us of putting our removed stuff in the checked in luggage (which we didn't, you can check it by checking the CCTV footage). Additionally these luggages were locked and well wrapped in plastic wrap. When I asked them to give me one luggage to remove the said additional weight, they stressed that they cannot allow it due to time limitations that i have to pay for 2 kgs. Out of fear of missing the flight, I paid 1800 INR at a nearby counter and that process also was extremely slow. And despite not allowing us to remove anything from our luggage due to time limitation, the check-in process was deliberately slowed and dragged. When I waited to make sure my luggage goes through the belt, they told me to go without verifying it. The whole time staff behavior was highly unprofessional ( please note I've traveled to many countries and have had to rearrange luggage several times too - this was not at all professional behavior). Everyone in the staff behaved like bullies. Then when we reached the gate, people from the check-in counter came to the gate and they discriminated against our family without letting us board in order one by one and told us to wait until everyone else boarded. When we tried several times to board one by one they said since we are a family we had to board all at once at the end. When I asked at least to let my pregnant sister board the flight and sit before us they denied saying that was not possible (this rule is very foreign to us because one would assume pregnant ladies get priority boarding). There were many staff and the gate and they all behaved highly unprofessionally like thugs, discriminating, bullying and harassing us. After everyone on the plane boarded without any weight checks (some even had multiple carry ons), they started to weigh our carry on luggage, using a hand held luggage scale (not proper equipment). At this point something was wrong with their hand held scale and they asked us to give them our personal hand held scale threatening not to let us board otherwise. They stressed only one 7kg luggage would be allowed on board per person and that we had to remove our lightweight backpacks. We removed our back packs and couldn't even go through what we were leaving behind since the whole staff was behaving like thugs and bullies. My mother's medication and prescriptions are also lost in the process. At this point also I asked again to let my pregnant sister board the flight with her 7kg carry on bag but the staff refused. Then they accepted 6 bags within the 7kg limit and our next bag was a backpack + a carry-on bag of which they measured the combined weight to be within the limit but stressed we have to pay for it since they were 2 bags. When we tried to put the backpack inside the other bag they didn't let us behave like thugs threatening us that we will miss our flight. We stressed several times that only 6 of our 7 bags were filled and this is our 7th weight allowance. They deliberately overlooked that and demanded we pay for 5kg extra weight. They kept threatening us again and again, blackmailing us with the time limitation without allowing us to do even the simplest modification till we paid more than 4000 INR, when we paid also they didn't have change and didn't give back around 300 INR. Even though the payment was done for the backpack, they took one of our carry-on luggage type bags which was of correct size/weight (I have taken this onboard several times), and put it in the checked in luggage. So we boarded with ONLY 6 luggage for 7 people. This whole thing felt nightmarish and the staff behavior was way beyond professional and it felt like an organized scam.
